Download as plain textDownload with italics

Having had no luck finding full episode scripts or subtitle files for UNCLE already on the web, I had a look into how much trouble it might be to rip the subs from my own DVDs (short answer: quite a bit, but totally doable). For anyone else trying the same sort of thing, after trying a few different options I cannot recommend subtitle extractor highly enough. It does a damn good job of streamlining the process, prompting for input on ambiguous letters, and spellchecking for capital i/lowercase L errors -- otherwise the bane of many a subs file. I haven't had the chance to comb through every file manually for any errors the extractor may have missed, but those I've gone through look pretty good. Do let me know if you find any errors though -- I can always re-upload the files with corrections.

The extractor also automatically flags italic subtitles with an html tag, which unfortunately don't seem to be recognised by all video players, so I've uploaded a second set with the italics stripped out. You can download the whole lot with italics here, or without italics here. Files are in .srt format, but you should be able to view them with any standard text reader as well.

Subtitles alone are a long way short of complete episode scripts, of course, as most lines have no attribution to clarify who's saying what. However, if anyone would like to use these as a starting point for creating attributed scripts or share them elsewhere, please feel free. I'm pretty much only using these things myself to settle my own curiosity on a few details of nickname usage and the like (ie, just how often does Napoleon call Illya tovarich/partner/etc) -- which has turned out to be a pretty interesting exercise all on its own, but that's a subject for another post.

Hey, thanks! I've always hoped that someday fans would get together to create episode transcripts. They have them in my other two main fandoms (Star Trek and Pros,) so I know how helpful transcripts can be, especially when writing.

It was really fabulous that you even thought about attempting it, though. Rock on!

What a nice thing to do! I'm sure this will be an outstanding resource for fans. :)

I confess to never having considered ripping the subtitles along with the videos!
