Yes, dear fan friends, it is that time of the year when announcements of upcoming challenges abound, and [community profile] muncle211 is no exception.

I wanted to give y'all a heads up that we will be hosting The Down the Chimney Affair gift exchange yet again this year - this will be our 14th consecutive year doing the exchange.

Over the next week I will be busily setting up the new challenge over on AO3 and DtCA will open for signups the first week of September.

The rules are the same and will be published with the sign-up post. DtCA has always been open to both gen and slash, and with the advent of the 2015 movie, is now also open to het and 3some offerings. We welcome works featuring either TV or movie verse. Fic is the primary focus, but requests for art and multi-media are always welcome (although we cannot guarantee we have someone with the skills to provide those requests, so have a backup plan in place).

Hope you're as excited about our annual holiday event as we are, and are ready to mark up your calendar for a busy holiday fan season! :)

Post-new LJ TOS,we ran into a small glitch when it came time to backup the LJ community known as muncle. The owner of the comm had created a placeholder community here on Dreamwidth (no content) but was the only admin here. A new community had to be created in order to import the 16 years worth of muncle content over, so now we're at [community profile] muncle211.

Come on in, pull up a chair, switch your Special over to the mercy setting and let's chat about all things UNCLE: the actors, the characters, vodka, the organization, the cold war and all sorts of related stuff. Don't forget we love all kinds of creative efforts like fic, manips, art and vids!

[community profile] muncle211 is primarily a slash community for both the TV series and the 2015 movie, but we're also open to gen and other pairings.

To introduce people to the concept of U.N.C.L.E. as an organisation, and THRUSH as their enemy, several paragraphs worth of explanation of both were included in some of the earliest promotional material, distributed back when The Man from UNCLE was still in production. I'd seen fragments of this text in the UNCLE files scans of an early promo booklet, and more in an old fanzine, but neither (even in combination) looked to be the full version. Like the three original character bios, those fragments contained a lot of information from the writers' guide about the world of UNCLE (such as the existence of the "Mask Club" as an entrance to UNCLE) which never did get used in the show, but which have long since made it into the collective fan history of the series, and been endlessly paraphrased in various wiki articles. Though the full text was unlikely to tell us much we didn't know already, I couldn't help but be curious.

As luck would have it, poking through old facebook posts I eventually found not one but two different versions of the text I was looking for – and a great deal of other interesting material with them.

UNCLE canon is an interesting beast. Google the show today, and you're likely to find yourself reading something about the HQ's secret entrance through Mask Club or Illya's love of jazz – both of which came direct from the official production notes, but neither of which ever made it into the series in any form. UNCLE is packed with these sort of idiosyncrasies, but one of my favourite examples of just how odd the blurry outer edges of UNCLE canon can get is the UNCLE gun.

Few could argue that the UNCLE Special was (and is) absolutely one of the defining icons of the show.

And if you'd actually like to hear about it, have a bunch of interesting facts, and plenty of links to more, including scans from a magazine article which went into its internal workings in even more detail )

So it would probably surprise most fans to note that virtually nowhere is any explicit reference to the special nature of the UNCLE gun ever made on screen.

Nowhere are we told that the guns carried by Section II agents were developed by UNCLE's own tech divisions. Nowhere are any of its special capabilities described for us in dialogue. The name, the "UNCLE Special" is never once spoken aloud.

I state this 'fact' with the minor caveat that if anyone can point out an example I've missed, then by all means, please correct me. But given that neither a rigourous text-based search through the complete subtitle files for all four seasons or the response when I first threw the question open to other fans turned up anything, I very much doubt there's much left to find.

The closest we ever get seems to be an incident in the Return movie where Napoleon wants to know, “What happened to the special U.N.C.L.E. guns we used to carry?” – and that coming only some 20 years after the original series left the air. In fact, rarely are any of the gun's special properties brought to our attention, even implicitly. A casual fan without enough firearms knowledge to tell a 'real' Walther P-38 from UNCLE's customised version could conceivably watch the whole series without noting the guns as having any particular significance at all.

Wait, what? )

And we are launched!

Welcome to the Man From UNCLE Bingo Season!

This is a low-key, inspirational challenge where themed prompts will be distributed as bingo cards. The general idea of a "bingo challenge" is to look over the list of prompts on a randomized bingo card and see if there are five in a row or column or diagonal that inspire you. Then create something based on each prompt in the line. When all five have been completed, then you've finished a "bingo". There are also other bingo patterns for more inspiration, explained under bingo types.

The Man From UNCLE bingo will be a mix of prompts from common themes and also specific ones for our fandom(s). We will be running for a full year, so if you're working on other challenges, you can finish those first. :) Inspiration all year round.

Our challenge covers both the TV series and the Movie version, and all are welcome to play! We have a livejournal, a tumblr, and an AO3 account, and we invite all manner of fandom to come and join us. If you like gen, slash, het, ot3, or whatever floats your boat, this sea accommodates it all. We are also all-inclusive as far as how your fandom is expressed. Write fic? Great! Do artwork? Awesome! Make music? Terrific! For fills on the prompts, we accept Story/Fanfic, Music Vid, Recommendations Set, Icons, Fannish Essay/Meta, Picspam, Art, Drawings, Manips, Layout, Music Mixes... all of those are perfectly valid and fun things to do or try.

You can get a card and read more about T/MFU Bingo, the rules, the themes, the bingo types, etc, at either our livejournal or tumblr.

And just to jump-start it, I wrote two stories for my own bingo cards. :) One MFU combo stamp, and one TMFU single fill (no bingo yet! working on it).
- MFU TV: One of These Times (angsty, presumed dead, gen with touchy-feely)
- TMFU Movie: Adjustments (team 3, mission fic, wounded first aid, gen)

Come join the fun! :)

Having found a beta willing to help me through the last stage of revisions (thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] garonne for many helpful suggestions and corrections), I can finally share this monster with the rest of the web. Link goes to AO3.

Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Summary: In a world where the occasional well-placed enemy mole or major security breach is simply a matter of course, a handful of UNCLE's most sensitive operational directives have never been committed to paper at all.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 28,544
Characters: Napoleon, Illya, Waverly, with appearances by Angelique, Ursula Alice Baldwin, Mark Slate, Gemma Lusso and "Wanda"
Notes: Effectively a mix of elaborate crack theories and historical trivia built around a faintly ridiculous amount of flirting, fluff and prolonged UST

A Unified Theory of UNCLE, in four parts
[identity profile] tallihensia.livejournal.com
More pre-planning for the bingo-season coming up. The LJ, Tumblr, and AO3 are done, so I was thinking about once people start turning bingos in (if they do). I just meant to do one or two as a test for the winner banners, and then I kept on going... lol. I figure people who turn in bingos can ask for which ones they want, and if they get more than one bingo, they can get a different base. ^^ jkkitty - I sent you a message about some of the details.

If anybody has any suggestions or ideas, I'd love feedback. I meant to get feedback before doing the others, but it was one of those sorts of weekends. ^^

Eight more days until launch! ^_^

Welcome to Spring Fling 2017!

Your challenge as a requestor? Find the perfect picture. It could be about cherry blossoms, new life, new beginnings with old friends. Post it in Scrapbook, along with your preferences - gen, het, slash, TV movie, etc. And then use the tag: Spring Fling 2017 story request. Then sit back. Your work is done.

Your challenge as a writer? Find a posted image that inspires you and claim it anonymously. Stories can be any length necessary to tell it, from a drabble to something much longer. You do not need to write a story to request one, but it's kinda nice if you can.

Posting will be March 18th in the Scrapbook.

Questions? Concerns? Let me know!

Since there aren't a lot of Spring/Summer events, and most of what there is is very specific to particular groups, I'm thinking of running an all-inclusive Man From Uncle Bingo Season.

Basically, I’ll set up an LJ and an AO3 collection and a tumblr to pass out bingo cards for MFU TMFU fandom fun. It’ll be one of my usual “you can post anything” to fill the squares, including fic, art, music, meta, etc. And fairly relaxed rules because it’s there to inspire people not make anybody feel worse for not getting something done. Cards will have my usual variations of tropes and cliches and fandom specific. (i.e., very similar to how I run the Clexmas Bingos, though I haven't done one for MFU before.)

(Clexmas example:  http://clexmas.livejournal.com/107625.html  )

Points I’m still debating, which you can weigh in on if you want. :)
- Timeframe: March through September, or a full year of March through March? (I’m leaning towards through Sept just because there are so many other challenge things happening Oct - Feb. I know I'll be busy, and I presume others will be as well.)
- I suck at doing banners for people who win bingos. Anybody want to help with this part? (I'll skip banners and points if nobody wants to do this and just make it inspiration only instead of reward driven.)
- Any other thoughts on it?

:)

It's for inspiration across the board, so it's meant to be fun and inclusive, rather than displace anything else existing. I see a gap. I want to fill it. ^^

These names won't be familiar to a lot of people, but Denetia Arellanes, a MFU writer/editor passed the week before Christmas. She put out one of the first MFU slash zines (back when you had to print stories on colored paper so people wouldn't 'accidently' read them and faint). She did Tales of Two UNCLEs and really contributed a lot to fandom in the 80's and 90's. She was a good friend of mine, but we drifted apart when she left MFU for Blake's 7.

Also Paulie Gilmore, an extraordinary MFU writer/artist/editor is back in the hospital with cancer. As a fandom, we are getting smaller and smaller. Give a first cousin a little love today. There aren't many of us left.

Part of the fun of the DtCA is that all stories are published anonymously for the first week, giving everybody a chance to guess at the mystery authors. Now you can know for sure - the authors' names are now revealed! Were you surprised or baffled?

Huge thanks to all who participated. DtCA is very special to me, our fandom's longest running fic project, and I know many others feel the same way and bring their best efforts to the challenge. You are the ones who make the season bright for me and it is so, so worth the effort.

*hugs* all around. And readers, please don't forget to tell the authors how much you enjoy their stories. They put their hearts and souls into bringing you the best vision they can of our Men from UNCLE.

It's a new year, and in the MFU-niverse, we're in our third season amidst a degree of nonsense and some of our favorite episodes.  It's quite a contrast between The Concrete Overcoat Affair and My Favorite Gorilla, the latter of which we speak in hushed tones to lessen the trauma.
With Season 3 in mind, let's ask a few questions.

Hope I don't sound like the Voice of Doom counting down - but here's a reminder that your Down the Chimney Affair stories for this year should be uploaded to the DtCA 2016 challenge on AO3 this coming Saturday, December 17th!

Please don't panic, though, because although we ask that the stories be uploaded by that evening, your story does not have to be 100% complete. You can still access your story and edit and tinker to your heart's content, all the way up through Christmas Eve. The stories go live on Christmas Day, December 25, at 10:00 am (that's US Central time).

The reason for the upload deadline is to give a headcount on defaults, so we can set any needed pinch hit authors to work. They will have less than one week to write their stories. I'm sorry to say I will not be available as a pinch hit writer this year - makes me feel like a slacker!

I'm pretty sure everyone has participated before and probably knows how to upload a story to the collection, but just in case, here's a link to last year's instructions. Disregard anything that is date specific in the instructions, and also be sure to upload to the 2016 collection!
How to Upload to the Collection

If you have any questions or problems, contact me via LJ private messaging or via email.

Heh. I just realized that this is the 13th year for this exchange and we had 13 wonderful people sign up! (Yeah, it took me a while to see that...)

Apologies for those seeing this for the second time - I tried posting this to [livejournal.com profile] mfuwss first, but wasn't able to find anyone who could help me out with betaing in the short term. Fic is of the Napoleon/Illya flavour, PG (maybe edging towards R-ish in a few places), and a solid 23,000 words worth of detailed canonical references, elaborate crack-theories, shameless historical geekery, and ridiculously over-extended UST. I have already had two different betas volunteer but wind up unable to help me out thanks to other commitments, and the fic has now been in various stages of limbo since July. If anyone is in a position to wade through this monster for me in relatively short order (I would very much like to have it done by the end of the year), I'd be very grateful.

For some idea of what you're getting into, one partial scene under the cut. )

Good morning, all.

Time flies by fast at this time of year, so wanted to give y'all a reminder that the deadline for DtCA is coming up soon. The final deadline to submit your stories (that is, upload them to the AO3 site) is a mere two weeks from today!

If you think you might not be able to meet this deadline or have any other problems, please contact either [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58 or [livejournal.com profile] sparky955 via LJ private messaging. They can help you find a beta reader or can start drumming up some pinch-hit writers. Or give you soothing recipes to fuel your last-minute writing frenzy... whatever.

Thanks to all who choose to participate. And now I return you to your regular fun weekend.

Looking forward to the stories!

Since Robert Vaughn died the other day, I've been receiving so many nice consoling messages because everyone know how I felt about Mr. Vaughn and identified with his alter ego. I've also been seeing various tributes on the mass media and within fandom and a couple of folks have asked me to talk about my own experiences. We're talking decades here, so it's going to take more than one post. I'll try to write about everything but it may take all week so bear with me.

You can find the first entry here

I have left it public so you don't have to be friended to me to read it.

A sad day

Robert Vaughn has passed away

Sorry about the weird coding. I was trying to post on my phone. Saw the news while I was in the supermarket helping my friend look for Christmas gifts for her little boy. It was all I could do not to start crying in front of everyone.

*hugs you all*
